The Worcestershire Way: a walking route worth knowing about

The Worcestershire Way is one of England lesser known long-distance footpaths, and Ockeridge sits just five minutes from it. Here is what makes it special.

One of the loveliest things about where we are is what sits right on the doorstep, and the Worcestershire Way is a proper example of that. It is a waymarked walking trail that runs for miles through the heart of the county, and the best part for us is how close it is. You do not have to get in the car to reach it. You just step out and go.

We say it to guests all the time, we’re only five minutes from the Worcestershire Way. That closeness is something we are quietly proud of, because a named trail passing this near the gates is not something you find everywhere.

What the Worcestershire Way actually is

The Worcestershire Way is a waymarked long-distance trail of around thirty-one miles, running between Bewdley in the north and Great Malvern in the south. It threads its way through orchards, woods and hills, so the scenery keeps changing as you go, which is what makes it such a lovely thing to walk. You can dip in for a gentle hour or set off for a proper day’s walking, it works both ways. If you like to plan ahead, there is a full route description of the Worcestershire Way that maps the whole thing out for you.

It is one of those routes that people from cities are often surprised by, because you can be walking through the middle of it and hear nothing but the birds. It is a bit different to what a lot of our guests are used to.

Joining it straight from a stay in the Worcestershire countryside

Because we are so close, you can join the Worcestershire Way without driving anywhere at all. You have your morning coffee, you step out of the hut, and within a few minutes you are on the trail. The stretch nearby takes you through the kind of countryside that we get to live in every day, the orchards down the road, the woods, and the rolling hills beyond, and it never really looks the same twice. One day you might spot a hare in the field, another day a pheasant flying up in front of you, there is always some little connection to the wildlife.

This is honestly the thing we most love people to do. Come and find the hut absolutely fantastic, and then head out and see what is just down the road. Worcestershire Way walking is one of the simplest ways to do that. It is just about doing simple stuff, isn’t it?

Planning a longer day on the trail

If you fancy a proper day of it, the Worcestershire Way gives you plenty to get your teeth into, with all thirty-one miles between Bewdley and Great Malvern to explore over time. Most people are not going to do the whole thing in one go, and that is fine, it lends itself beautifully to picking a stretch and taking your time. Pack a flask, take your boots, and let the hills and woods do their thing. You come back a bit tired and a lot calmer, which is rather the point of a stay here.

And the walking sits alongside so much else in the area, the apple orchards, the local pubs, the little farm shops. If you want a fuller picture of what is around us, we have gathered some of our favourites on our out and about page to help you make a day of it.

A comfortable base after a day’s walking

After a good walk, coming back to a warm hut and a copper bath is a fairly special way to end the day. All six of our retreats make a lovely base for it, from the ever popular Ashwood to the family Montana, and every one has its own private outdoor space to sit out in once your boots are off. You will sleep brilliantly too, we have put a lot into the beds, the goose down duvets and the fluffy pillows, so tired legs are well looked after.

Come and swap the everyday for a bit of this, walk a beautiful stretch of the Worcestershire Way and let a copper bath finish the day off. Book your stay with us and we would love to have you.
