Things to do near Ockeridge: the best of Worcestershire on your doorstep

You could happily spend a whole stay inside your hut. But if you do venture out, there is a lot waiting just down the road.

People often say to us that they came for the hut and stayed for everything around it. And we love that, because the area really is the other half of what we do. You could stay a week here and do something different every single day without driving more than half an hour. So while the accommodation is what brings you, the countryside is what keeps you coming back.

The way we see it, you step into your hut, you find it fantastic, and then the first thing you want to do is get out and explore. That is the ideal, isn’t it? A lovely base, and then a proper adventure waiting just past the gates.

What you can walk to from the gates

The footpaths start right by us, so close that one guest left a review saying the footpaths were thirty seconds away. That is genuinely how it feels. You step out and you are into it, no faffing about, no getting in the car first.

From the door you can wander into the Ockeridge woods, or pick up the Worcestershire Way, which is only five minutes from us. The Malvern Hills sit out on the horizon, about forty minutes away, and plenty of people set off to walk them for the day. And the lanes around us are quiet enough that cycling feels safe and simple, so if you like two wheels there is miles of it to enjoy at your own pace. It’s just about doing simple stuff, really.

Days out in the Worcestershire countryside

If you fancy going a bit further afield, there is a lovely spread of things to do in Worcestershire all within about thirty minutes, and no two of them are the same.

  • Witley Court, a spectacular ruined mansion in English Heritage care, just a couple of miles down the road, with gardens, woodland walks and the Baroque interior of Witley Church beside it. You can actually see it from us.
  • The Wyre Forest, all winding trails and proper woodland, with plenty of room to spend a whole afternoon.
  • The Severn Valley Railway, a heritage steam line that is a lovely day out whether or not you are a train person.
  • West Midlands Safari Park, a bit different again and brilliant if you have the little ones with you in the Montana.
  • Ombersley, one of those villages that is worth an hour or two on foot, all black and white houses and history and a few nice pubs along the way.

That is the joy of it. One day you are climbing hills, the next you are wandering ruins, the day after you are on a steam train. You never run out.

Planning a stay around exploring

A lot of people, and we understand why, hunker down in the hut and barely move, cocooned in that quiet with a bath run to whatever temperature they like. That is lovely too. But if you are the sort who likes to be out and about, this is a fantastic place to base yourself, because so much is close and none of it is a slog to reach.

The huts each have their own character, so whether you are in the Ashwood, the Monkwood, the Shepherds Retreat, the Abberley or Hillside View, you have got a warm cosy spot to come back to at the end of a day on your feet. Walk all morning, potter round a village at lunch, then sink into that soak with a bit of music on. It works.

We have gathered a bit more on all of this over on our out and about pages, and if you are weighing up a break closer to home, our thoughts on UK staycations are worth a read too. There really is something for everybody here, isn’t there?

Come and explore for yourself

Half the fun is that first morning, when you step out and realise how much is right on the doorstep. Book a hut and come and find out what a stay here really feels like. We would love to have you.
